Geocaching chat log from: 2002-11-25

* ClayJar welcomes everyone to the 45th weekly chat as he checks UPS for his vest's coordinates. [Begin Log 45]
<Leprechaun> they were a string of virtuals just placed between New Brighton and the Ohio Border.  I drove all the way to Ohio to pick up all 4!
<pater47> that would be next week - not tonite
<Dekaner> stupid out of town tourists!
<cachew_nut> welcome to chat...let's begin
<Archie> pater, you get to move around the state to much... thats not fair..:-(
<pater47> My vest is still in Washington - been there since 21st
<fouts> i'm here, but i'm a bit distracted tonight
<Tonsil> Lep: ah, wow... truly dedicated!
<ClayJar> Pater: UPS Ground?
<cachew_nut> why fouts?
<pater47> yep
<fouts> it's my 21st wedding anniversary
<cachew_nut> congrats
<Leprechaun> I went the whole weekend with no caches (kid didn't want to go) so I made up for it by doing 5 after work today
<JohnyReb> congrats
<ClayJar> It won't show as anywhere else until it gets to the hub.
<Leprechaun> congrats Marty
<Chris-Mouse> congratulations fouts
<pater47> expected delivery is 12-2
<cachew_nut> 21 more!
<Markwell> Mine hasn't been shipped yet. :(
<ClayJar> congrats, fouts.  It's my sister's 24th birthday.  (Not Sis-O-Clay)
<Archie> lep, what time to they let you off work ???
<ClayJar> Mw: When did you order?
<Markwell> Friday 11 pm
<CYBret> Wow, you've been married one whole legal drinker!
<Leprechaun> I left the office at 4:45 and found 4 virts and a physical cache between here and Ohio, and still made it to chat
*** mtn-man has joined #geocache
<mtn-man> hello cachers
<ClayJar> Mw: two days to ship... one more to track.
<gpsfun> hi, m-m
<mtn-man> !!! hey gpsfun
<Archie> lep, yall have sun up there all nite.....lol
<cachew_nut> you did remember, right fouts/
<cachew_nut> ?
<gpsfun> back so soon???
*** LindaLu has joined #geocache
<mtn-man> here today, gone again tomorrow!
<cachew_nut> lindalu
<Chris-Mouse> hi mtn-man
<pater47> LindaLu, How do you do
<Chris-Mouse> hello LindaLu
<LindaLu> just fine thank you, Hi all
<mtn-man> hey chris
<Archie> helloo linda lu, how do you do..
<fouts> yes. we celebrated last nite
<MrGigabyte> Donna... perfect timing. I need to pick your brain again.
<pater47> beat ya, arch
<DonnaG> Go ahead Mr G
<Archie> so i c..lol
<cachew_nut> good, no frying pan to the head for forgetting then
<Dekaner> is there an "official" meeting time here?
<ClayJar> Anyone know the star-digits for "harassing phone call"?  (I'm tiring of the wrong-number idiots.)
<Archie> where ya reckon peggy sue is pater..lol
<MrSnazz> wow, its Monday already.
<Leprechaun> this is it, dekaner!
<MrSnazz> *57 iirc
<Dekaner> wooo go me, it's my birthday woo woo woo
<Dekaner> oh wait, no it's not.  just ignore me
<mtn-man> hehe, sorry CJ
<cachew_nut> they probably have the wrong area code cj
<MrSnazz> that's to report the call to the telco
<Archie> oooohhhhhh dddoooonnnnnaaa. hi..lol
<Markwell> we just passed the official start 5 minutes ago...
<pater47> She went out with William Joseph James Robert tonite
<Chris-Mouse> ClayJar: it could be worse. My phone number is one digit off the local Costco warehouse. the two digits involved are 7 and 1
<pater47> his friends call him Billy Joe Jim Bob
<mtn-man> hey senior markwell
<ClayJar> Hehe, that's bad, but I get wrong numbers for a HOTEL.
<cachew_nut> 1 and 7 aren't close to each other
<MrGigabyte> Donna.. take a look at this cache... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=41254
<DonnaG> OOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrchiiiieeeeeeeeeeee
<ClayJar> ...753... versus ...723...
<pater47> My number used to be one digit off of Domino's pizza
<Leprechaun> I once had the former phone number of a bank branch. We finally got tired of saying wrong number, and instead conducted some bizarre telephone banking transactions
*** Tonsil has quit IRC ("Leaving")
<gpsfun> 1 and 7 are only about four beers apart
<Chris-Mouse> lol lep. I've been tempted.
<Archie> :-).. dg
<mtn-man> i just stay on the internet so noone gets through anyway
<LindaLu> handwritten 1 and 7 are very close for some people
<Chris-Mouse> gpsfun:  they're a lot closer than that when someone is sloppy writing the number down.
*** Freelens has quit IRC
<Dekaner> our number was dislexic for an apartment maintenance number
<mtn-man> (though we may get dsl soon)
<Dekaner> if the people were nice we'd tell them the right number
<cachew_nut> handwriting should be banned
<DonnaG> OK Mr G I have the page
<ClayJar> When it says "no caller id" I don't even answer.  Apparently I sound like an answering machine to telemarketers' predictive dialers.
<Dekaner> if they screamed at us as soon as we picked up about how their toilet was overflowing we assured them we'd send the plumber right over
<MrGigabyte> Donna... I may have napped thru most of my geodesy courses, but me thinks these to great circles intersect each other only at the poles.
<Chris-Mouse> mtn-man: I got cable here because it was cheaper than the second phone line plus dialup internet.
<pater47> I just let telemarketers talk to my Furby
<MrGigabyte> Donna... longitude is obvious, latitude would be +/- 90
<Dekaner> four words ... do not call list
<ClayJar> I've tried to sell a telemarketer some really nice shoes once. :))
<mtn-man> i want dsl so i dont have to share the cable with my whole nieghborhood
<mtn-man> neighborhood
<Archie> you go jar.lol you go boy.lol.. im gonna try that....lol
<gpsfun> I ask telemarketers for their home phone number and what time they have dinner...
<cachew_nut> i used to get people call me complaining to turn their cacle back on, i told them if they called again i would turn off their heat
<ClayJar> m-m: You're sharing the DSL with the same number.  It just bottlenecks at the telco instead of at the pole.
<Chris-Mouse> mtn-man: you still share the data with the whole neighbourhood. It's just that you have your own wire to the phone office instead of just to the street
<MrSnazz> lol
*** BeckAway has joined #geocache
<DonnaG> Mr G they say compass bearings so you start at the poles but direction points to Mag North
<cachew_nut> cacle=cable
<LindaLu> hi beck
<mtn-man> sound like it stinks either way, maybe i will just stay with dailup
<Chris-Mouse> hiya Beckerbuns
<MrGigabyte> Donna.. BTW: the cache hide, Team KFWB are the guys that put all the big cash in the caches around here. Last on foun on the Island had over $3000 in it.
<mtn-man> heya BB!!!
<Archie> well, im gonna run.. i know yall are all heart broken, but i must.. it was very nice to see all yall again..
*** Rob_Who has quit IRC ("Leaving")
<Archie> yall have fun chatting..
<pater47> cya archie
<DonnaG> I have been following those in the Canada forum
<Dekaner> I think cable modem service is selective by who you're with.  here earthlink cable (rebadged road runner for $5 less/month) is way faster than dsl
<Chris-Mouse> wow! I usually find McToys here.
*** Archie has quit IRC ("Leaving")
<mtn-man> my local cable provider is the worst, so I wont add insult to injury
<MrGigabyte> Donna, they say compass, but they also say "True"
<Dekaner> makes me want to go to the Great White North, eh?
<ClayJar> m-m: sharing broadband is far nicer than sharing a modem connection.  (Dialups are just as shared, and often worse.)
<LindaLu> are there any interesting geocaching topics to discuss tonight?
*** RobAGD has joined #Geocache
<mtn-man> hey rob!
<Chris-Mouse> I've got cable service here. The data isn't bad, but the other services, like e-mail and DNS tend to be horrible. So I set up my own.
<mtn-man> dude
<RobAGD> grrrr
<ClayJar> The main one is the geo-vest tracking service.
<CYBret> Uggh . . we have to share a dial up @ my office
<pater47> you were supposed to bring the topic, LL
<RobAGD> ahhh crap Un Reg version,
<fouts> yes. i'm coming up on #300 and I want some input on what i should do special to celebrate it
<JohnyReb> speaking of compass...can anyone suggest a good link on how to properly suet and use one?
<Leprechaun> winter caching is a good topic, too
<cachew_nut> looking forward to hiiting a bunch on the west coast next week
<mtn-man> been there cybret
<DonnaG> Oh right so they are astronomic, making them lines of longitude, Yes? So you would be correct
<JohnyReb> suet=set
<Chris-Mouse> CYBret: I love working at a college :-)
<LindaLu> ok, what's a geo-vest tracking service?
<JohnyReb> sorry..feeding the hogs
<CYBret> Share DSL at home  :-)
<RobAGD> cj - did you Java Applet expire ?
<Chris-Mouse> JohnyReb: have you tried searching for some orienteering sites?
*** WigglePuss has joined #geocache
<Leprechaun> JohnyReb, just buy "Be expert with Map and Compass" by Bjorn Kjellstrom.  Available thru amazon
<Dekaner> ok ok on to winter caching
<LindaLu> suet=that stuff we feed to birds
<ClayJar> Rob: it doesn't expire, far as I know.
<JohnyReb> no Chris
<mtn-man> my choice is earthlink dsl vs at&t cable
<ClayJar> The geocaching.com fleece vests came available last week, so a bunch of us have them in-transit.
<Dekaner> has anyone had any luck with winter events?
<LindaLu> ah yes
<mtn-man> i hate at&t
<RobAGD> humm I am getting the ##### Unregistered copy, eval only
<RobAGD> ##### Please ask webmaster to register
<MrGigabyte> Donna. strange they would screw that up. They are most certainly not UNB grads!
<cachew_nut> we're having one saturday
<Dekaner> is it winter there?
<cachew_nut> there is snow
<LindaLu> define winter
<DonnaG> Don't be too sure, you only need c's to pass! ;)
<JohnyReb> I'll check it out LEp, thanks
<Chris-Mouse> I'm still waiting for winter to start here.
<Dekaner> a few feet of snow
<LindaLu> it just gets a little wetter here, that's all
<Dekaner> I'm thinking feb. time frame
<fouts> the 90 day period starting at the winter solstice
<Leprechaun> JR, ask someone to buy it for you for Christmas via amazon
<ClayJar> We don't have a problem with winter events in Lousiana, except for the scheduling thing.
<LindaLu> nothing that will stop a true WASHingtonian
*** TestingApplet has joined #Geocache
<cachew_nut> i don't believe we tried that yet
<Dekaner> something for us die hard cachers that are feeling the need
<TestingApplet> (Testing.)
<Chris-Mouse> winter here generally means enough snow to cover the ground, but not enough to be useful.
*** TestingApplet has quit IRC (Client Quit)
<JohnyReb> I'll ceck the libray first...I'm cheap
<DonnaG> Mr G, probably U o T grads
<Dekaner> I was checking with a local resort and for $20 per person they would give us a heated pavilion, rent us all snowshoes, give us group instruction and then provide lunch vouchers in their cafeteria
<Dekaner> was trying to figure out how to turn that into some multi-cache fun for an event
*** WigglePuss is now known as Choberiba
<mtn-man> sounds fun
<Dekaner> but tracks was my biggest concern
<fouts> winter is that period of the year in Montana when the sun rises at 9am and sets at 3pm, and the temp never gets above -10 f
<Leprechaun> CHOB!
<Chris-Mouse> Dekaner: that doesn't sound too bad.
<Choberiba> Hey!
<mtn-man> chobe!
<BeckAway> Eric!!!
<Choberiba> Long time no pester...
*** BeckAway is now known as Beckerbuns
<Markwell> hey choib
<Chris-Mouse> fouts:  for me. the winter unofficially starts and ends when we change the clocks.
<Markwell> chob
<Dekaner> I figured the turn out wouldn't be as big as our last event (125+) so maybe a few different multicaches and the teams could go as groups
<RobAGD> humm chob or is it neila ?
<CYBret> ERRRRIIIICCCCCC
<kablooey> Hi ESP!!!
<Choberiba> Sheesh... I guess you folks remember me..
<MrGigabyte> Donna.. I'm hot on the trail of these guys. I know what survey jobs they have worked on, where they get their GPS tags made, who sold them the Trimble gear etc. I have lots of locals email me asking who they are. All I reply is that they are rich and very generous. Last count they have hidden over $25,000 in caches in 2 months, in 40 caches.
<Dekaner> maybe a handful of 3 or 4 points to each multicache, teams of 5-10?
<Beckerbuns> Hi Blu!!!

<mtn-man> hey man, you were right about the cache
<Choberiba> Life has been busy, not even time for keychain huntin'
<gpsfun> hi, darebel
<mtn-man> hey DaRebel
<kablooey> mtn: does that mean I can log it?
<mtn-man> absolutely!
<Dekaner> at our last event there were so many people even without the tracks in the snow it was hard not to pass a large group on their way to a cache

<Chris-Mouse> that may be a while Dekaner :-)

<mtn-man> haha
<Chris-Mouse> of course, I could be wrong...
<ClayJar> Okay, I hereby invite everyone to come geocaching in Louisiana this winter.  I guarantee no snowbanks.
<mtn-man> yeah, there are a few good cachers out there I hear
<Chris-Mouse> ClayJar:  but the snowbanks are half the fun.
<mtn-man> hehe
<cachew_nut> you still have mosquitos in LA?
<Markwell> I'm heading toward mtn-man, thanks.
<Beckerbuns> Woo!
<Beckerbuns> Just got off the phone with CPS.
<ClayJar> They're not as bad during the winter.

<mtn-man> almost GA
<kablooey> CJ: and what isn't?
<ClayJar> Cuba.

<mtn-man> hehe
<ClayJar> go to an event cache
<Leprechaun> Marty: find an urban micro, naked.
<mtn-man> i am doing #250 tomorrow
<fouts> done that already lep
<mtn-man> i hope to find a cache that was created by one of the cachers chatting in this channel tomorrow

<DaRebel> :) That could be anywhere!
<fouts> the cachers chatting tomorrow?
<cachew_nut> you could come find mine
<fouts> i'm confused
<mtn-man> no, i am going to find one tomorrow
<Mopar> course i also grabbed 3 TB's in last 2 days

<mtn-man> yeah, i have to actually FIND it
<JohnyReb> I'm too scared to grab a bug yet...don't want to mess up anybody bug
<Mopar> which is funny, since in the last 14 months, i only found one pre-TB traveler, and one TB
<mtn-man> (so i will keep quite)
<JohnyReb> I'll read a bit more first
<DonnaG> Mr G - this cache problem is bugging me, I am showing the page to our geodetic guy tomorrow!

<Beckerbuns> c-m, wish more people were that thoughtful
<kablooey> what's the (approx) radius of the earth?
<Chris-Mouse> no snow here. Not anymore.
<fouts> i found a cache in the snow in montana in october
<ClayJar> I haven't gotten cleared yet, but actually, what time will the bacon be?
<Mopar> well, not all TB's have their goal spelled out with them
<Mopar> so far ive been totally lucky

<Beckerbuns> so I've found more than you, mo?
<mtn-man> or so
<Leprechaun> kablooey, it is approx. half the diameter.
<pater47> I don't know, kablooey - my tape measure keeps melting
<mtn-man> hehe lep

<mtn-man> haha
<Mopar> once i log everything, ill have 4 offical TB's
<MrGigabyte> Donna.. know of any online calculators that will solve the the intersection of great circles?
<ClayJar> Okay, so at worst case, I just have to drive through the night to get there, eat, and drive back through the day to run sound in the AM... no prob.

<DrDoug> fouts: Yep yep.
<DonnaG> Mr G - try www.gazza.co.nz/greatcircle.html
<kablooey> c_nut: but I'm done with that one now, gonna work on Coffee Central
<Choberiba> Hi Doug
<RobAGD> I took trig abd calc in HS and that was over 15 years ago, and I cabn safely say that if I had not started Geocaching I would have NEVER used any of that math :)
<kablooey> c_nut: I went to Livermore last week and returned home after four hours with no finds.
<cachew_nut> i see some new ones popped up in pleasanton kablooey
<ClayJar> I'd have to look up the grid north to true north correlation for the location, but other than that, the trig can be written down on a web page for easy plug-and-go.
<fouts> but would you trust anyone who thought the gazza was in kiwi land?
* RobAGD thinks blue just likes collecting DNF's
<kablooey> c_nut: yeah, I'll ignore them for now, let you figure out what's worth chasing.

<cachew_nut> markwell hid one in illinois but it was way out in farmland or somewhere away from the city if i recall correctly, not too sure
